Stop Offshore Drilling
It is vital that we stop expanding offshore oil and gas drilling operations to protect our precious web of ocean life. Oil spills are an inevitable and unfortunate consequence of this toxic industry; however, what is not so commonly known, are the disruptive noises produced from seismic airgun surveys and subsea refineries.
To search for oil beneath the seafloor, fossil fuel industries conduct seismic surveys by towing arrays of airguns behind a ship which create powerful explosions every 10-15 seconds. The noise permeates the seafloor into the earth’s mantle. The signal that reflects back is deciphered to portray the substances and structures below. These ongoing surveys can often be heard thousands of miles from the source and are known to disrupt marine mammals and fish; compromising their hearing, displacing them from their habitats, disrupting their migrations, elevating stress, and even killing them.
